Health & Exercise; An Important Part Of Your Life!
How do you make exercise and healthy eating a part of your life? Why does it seem so difficult to lose weight and stay motivated? For one thing, dieting methods and supplements are everywhere, promoting the myth that there are fast and easy solutions for weight loss. Many of us look outside ourselves for help and answers, and being told just what we want to hear....that it is possible to "melt those extra pounds and inches away". The truth is that it takes hard work, determination and commitment to get into great shape. It requires that you take an honest look at your current eating and exercise habits and make changes where necessary.
Do yourself a huge favor. Forget about "new" ways of eating, such as high protein diets, fat-burning diets, muscle building diets, or any other kind of diet! Forget about fat-burning supplements, spot reducing exercises, and too good to be true promises. These gimmicks are designed to appeal to what you want to believe....that there is a magic cure for reducing body fat and firming up. Diets and ads for supplements only accomplish one thing well. They help you lose weight by emptying your wallet, and by the time you have figured out that they dont work, your money has already been spent, your time has been wasted, you feel like a failure, and you wind up starting all over again.
You need to know that getting into great shape and staying that way is only as complicated or expensive as you choose it to be. The body still processes food the same way as it always has and responds to exercise as it always has. Eat too many calories and you will gain weight. Eat fewer calories and you will lose weight. Exercise less, lose muscle, exercise more, gain muscle. Period. The bottom line is that we each must educate ourselves on the basics of nutrition, strength training and aerobic exercise. Doing so will allow us to make no-nonsense, informed decisions about the foods we eat and how to get the most out of our workouts.
Until then, let’s talk about how to get yourself motivated. All the knowledge in the world isnt going to help you if you feel powerless to make changes in your life. Do you seem to have good intentions about starting an exercise program and then fall short? Have you ever felt separated from those "other" people? You know, the ones who always seem to eat the right foods, exercise consistantly and make it all look so much easier than you find it to be? Do they have some sort of secret formula, are they smarter than you, do they possess something that you dont? Not at all. Think about this: How many things do you do every day that you would just as soon not bother with? Things you dont necessarily enjoy doing.....brushing your teeth, taking the garbage out, stopping to put gas in the car, going to work, mowing the grass....the list is endless. Why do you do these things when it would be much be easier not to? The answer is clear: you fear the consequences of not doing them, and you feel a sense of responsibility, order and control when you do. You take personal responsibility, you do what you need to do. The same connection can and must be made to nutrition and exercise, without it you will always feel set apart. It is far too easy to fool yourself into thinking that because you are feeling no immediate consequences from eating poorly or being inactive that these things dont matter.
The truth is that the vast majority of people who make lifestyle changes start out unsure of what to expect, often disliking the idea of having to take time to exercise or plan meals. However, they soon discover the many beneficial effects of physical activity and proper nutrition on the mind, body and spirit. They begin to make the comparison between the way they looked and felt with exercise and without it. Once this discovery is made, working out and eating healthy becomes something they look forward to instead of something they dread.
Human nature dictates that if you feel no reward or sense of accomplishment attached to a particular behavior, you will be less likely to repeat that behavior. It is imperative that you make the connection between lack of exercise and/or eating the right foods and how you look and feel each day. Until you make this connection, you will always look at exercise as a chore. Feeling great both mentally and physically is the driving force behind training consistently. This very powerful force is the difference between your continued success and failure.
